What is the main difference between acrylic and Gelcoat fibreglass?

Acrylic is a sheet of material that in the manufacturing of bathtubs is heated and vacuum-formed onto a mould, creating a continuous waterproof membrane. It is then reinforced with fiberglass for added stability and insulation value. Acrylic is non-porous by nature, warm to the touch and retains its gloss finish better than any other material. Acrylic is well recognized for its ability to withstand constant use and cleaning.

Gelcoat fiberglass is a coloured polyester resin sprayed onto a mould then reinforced with fiberglass. Being more porous and brittle than acrylic, the gelcoat / fiberglass surface has a greater tendency to dull and discolour over time.

How do I look after my whirlpool bathtub?

Periodically purging the whirlpool pump, pipes and fittings in the following manner, even if your whirlpool is used only as a soaker with out the pump running, will ensure optimum worry-free enjoyment. Although we do not recommend the use of bubble bath in a whirlpool tub, because of the possibility of damage to the whirlpool system, this recipe for cleaning should also be followed whenever you choose to use a bath foam or oil.
  1. Fill the bath with hot water
  2. Add a ½ cup of low foaming dishwasher detergent
  3. Run the whirlpool pump for 10 minutes
  4. Stop the pump and drain the water
  5. Refill the bath with COLD water
  6. Run the whirlpool pump for 5 to 10 minutes
  7. Drain the bath

What is the main difference between a Whirlpool and an Air tub?

In very basic terms, the whirlpool system works on the forceful movement of water through power jets, whereas the air system works on the introduction of air into the water to create a bubbling effect in the water. A whirlpool jet is designed for a customizable massage and invigorate the body. The air system is designed to surround your body with thousands of air bubbles for a relaxing massage.

For the ultimate in luxury and comfort, why not inquire about the air / hydro combination systems. This "why choose" combination offers both whirlpool systems and affords the bather(s) total flexibility.

What is the best way to keep the acrylic surface clean?

The acrylic sheet, which forms the surface of your bathtub, provides one of the most durable surfaces found in modern bathrooms. Keep it bright and smooth with the regular use of any mild non-abrasive liquid cleanser. Never use window cleaning sprays, abrasive cleaners, scouring compounds or pads, acetone or ammonia compounds that could damage or dull the surface. To give your acrylic or gelcoat unit an exceptional shine, we recommend the use of Mirogloss Acrylic Polish or an occasional application of Turtle wax.

I want to do the renovation myself. Does the product come with easy to follow instructions?

All of our products (Mirolin and Aquaglass) come with a full set of installation instructions for the do-it-yourselfer but if in doubt, contact a professional contractor or plumber to ensure that the work is done according to code and installed properly.

Why doesn't my white tub match the rest of the white fixtures in my bathroom?

If you are involved in a renovation and trying desperately to match everything…don't. Remember that you are purchasing a variety of product that are made from different materials and there is no way to ensure that colours will match. For example, china or ceramic will colour differently than acrylic, gelcoat or plastic.

Also, there is often a difference in one run than another, so you may be matching to a sample only to then find that when you get the product it does not match the sample. Instead, consider introducing accents or enhancements to your colour scheme, such as wallpaper borders, tile, accessories, towels and artwork, so that the whites are not the only colour and/or texture in the bathroom.
